What gallon size actually means
The gallon number refers to the container the plant is growing in — not the amount of water it needs or the volume of the plant. A 3-gallon Clusia is a younger, smaller plant in a 3-gallon pot. A 45-gallon is a much more mature, significantly taller plant in a larger container.
In practical terms, gallon size tells you two things: how tall the plant is when it arrives, and roughly how quickly it will look like a finished hedge after installation.
3-gallon — the budget option
3-gallon Clusia arrives at about 10 inches tall for Clusia, 1 foot for Podocarpus and Areca Palm. It's the smallest and most affordable starter. For a 100-foot hedge run, 3-gallon plants at tight spacing give you the most plants per dollar.
The trade-off is time. A 3-gallon hedge takes 12 to 18 months to look fully finished. If you're installing a long back-of-property line and you're not in a rush, 3-gallon is a sensible choice. If the hedge line is visible from your pool or main living areas, it's worth stepping up.
7-gallon — the most popular choice
7-gallon is the size we install most often on residential jobs across Florida. Clusia arrives at 2 to 2.5 feet, Podocarpus at around 4 feet, Areca Palm at about 3 feet.
At correct spacing, a 7-gallon hedge looks nearly finished within 6 to 9 months and the visual gap between plants closes quickly. It's the best balance of cost and timeline for most homeowners.
15-gallon — finished privacy from day one
15-gallon is the jump where the hedge starts to look finished on install day. Clusia arrives at 4.5 feet — already above head height in the lower gallon sizes — and Podocarpus at around 5 feet.
This is the size we recommend for pool-adjacent hedge lines, side yards where sightlines are immediate, and any run that's visible from the main entertaining areas of the property. You pay more per plant, but you get a finished result the same day the crew leaves.
25-gallon — premium residential and estate
25-gallon gives you a 6-foot Clusia or 7-foot Podocarpus arriving at the property. This is the size for homeowners who want maximum immediate privacy and are willing to pay for it. Front-of-property lines, high-visibility boundaries, and estate-level installs.
At 3 to 3.5 feet on centre, the hedge looks solid from install day and requires only time to thicken — it's already screening from the first week.
45-gallon — maximum size
45-gallon plants arrive at 7 to 8 feet for Clusia and 8 feet for Podocarpus and Areca Palm. This is our largest available size and the option for immediate, complete privacy on a highly visible or sensitive property line.
45-gallon installs cost significantly more per plant but the hedge looks mature from day one. We typically recommend this size for pool enclosures where the homeowner doesn't want to wait at all, or for street-facing runs on premium properties.
How to decide
Ask yourself two questions: how visible is this hedge line from the areas of the yard I use most, and how long am I willing to wait for it to look finished?
High visibility + low tolerance for waiting = 15-gallon minimum. Low visibility or long runway = 7-gallon. Budget is the priority and you can wait = 3-gallon.
