Old Hedge Removal Before a New Installation — What to Expect

Why removal comes first

Most homeowners who call us about a new privacy hedge already have something in the ground that needs to come out. An overgrown ficus, a dead hedge line, the wrong species in the wrong spot, or patchy plantings that never delivered real privacy.

Getting the old material out properly before the new plants go in is the part most people underestimate. If you plant into poorly prepared ground — old root systems still in the soil, compacted areas from previous plants — the new hedge won't establish as well or as fast.

What we remove

We remove overgrown hedges and shrubs, dead or dying hedge lines, old ficus hedges, and any existing planting that's in the way of a new installation. Ficus removal is particularly common in South Florida — ficus hedges were widely planted for years but many are now diseased, invasive, or in violation of local ordinances.

We also handle full hedge replacements — when the existing hedge is the wrong species, grown too wide or too tall, or simply past its useful life.

How the process works

We quote removal and installation together. When you message us on WhatsApp, describe what's currently in the ground and what you want to replace it with. We'll quote both the removal and the new installation as a combined job.

On the day, our crew arrives, removes the old material cleanly, prepares the ground, and installs the new hedge in the same visit. You don't need to arrange separate disposal — we haul away everything we remove.

Does removal affect the timeline?

For most residential jobs, removal adds a few hours to the day but doesn't push the installation to a second visit. A typical removal and replacement along a 50 to 100-foot run is still completable in one crew day.

Larger removal jobs — long established ficus lines, multiple hedge runs, or properties with difficult access — may need a dedicated removal day before the installation. We'll flag this in your quote if it applies.

What removal costs

Removal is quoted separately from the plant order. The $500 minimum applies to plants only. The removal cost depends on the volume and type of material coming out, how accessible the site is, and whether the material needs to be chipped or hauled in larger pieces.

We give you a full breakdown in the quote — plants, delivery, installation, and removal as separate line items so you can see exactly what you're paying for.
